MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. At this very moment, more than 16 million American children are facing a harsh reality: They have no idea where their next meal is coming from.
This month, family pizza restaurant Bellizzi is joining thousands of restaurants nationwide to support anti-hunger nonprofit Share Our Strengths No Kid Hungry campaign by raising money during the week of Sept. 16 to 22.
Ten percent of all sales at the Mount Kisco restaurant will be donated to the campaign during the week. In addition, for every dollar donated to the campaign, Bellizzi will match it up to $10, redeemable on the next visit. Share Our Strengths mission is to ensure that every child in America has access to the nutritious food they need every day.
As a person who is directly involved in the creation of healthful food every day, it moves me to action when you envision these children not having access to any food at all, Bellizzi general manager Natalie Swatz said in a statement.
The organization calculates that its "Dine Out for No Kid Hungry" event, launched in 2008, has raised more than $4 million, funds that are used to raise awareness about child hunger in the U.S.
Money raised from the event also directly supports school breakfast and summer and after-school meal programs, contributes to education initiatives that teach families how to cook healthy meals with limited resources, and goes to create public-private partnerships that work together to provide kids with the food they need.
Everyone private citizens, businesses, policymakers and nonprofits has a role in helping end childhood hunger in America, said Billy Shore, founder and CEO of Share Our Strength.
Bellizzi is at 153 E. Main St. and is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. For more information about this event, visit Bellizzi's website or the Dine Out for No Kid Hungry site.
