Created in 2007, these annual awards are a distinctive program that evaluates and ranks the best places of employment based on employee satisfaction and engagement, as well as workplace practices and policies. Curtis Instruments was ranked thirteenth in 2011 and did not apply for the rankings last year.
“The beautiful thing about these rankings is that they are not external,” said Curtis Instruments Communications Director Frank Matheis.
“This is a process that’s 75 percent weighed by our own employees. What we get out of it is the results of these surveys come from their perspective. It gauges how our employees feel and the results are indicative of how we view our corporate environment.”
Although Curtis Instruments has been located in Mount Kisco, New York, since 1960, the company keeps a relatively low profile considering it is considered an international leader in instrumentation, battery monitoring and motor speed controllers for all types of electric vehicles.
“Even though we’re one of the largest employers and have been here a long time, we have kept relative obscurity,” said Matheis. “We are here but many people still don’t know what we are.”
Since the company’s main operation goes into energizing vehicles such as forklifts, wheelchairs, neighborhood electric vehicles, golf cars, aerial lifts, industrial utility vehicles, and airport vehicles, it does not see too much face to face time with customers.
But that hasn’t stopped it from interacting with Mount Kisco’s community.
“Even though people don’t buy our products directly, we take pride in being intrinsically involved with our surrounding community,” said Matheis.
Matheis noted the organizations Curtis Instruments has been most involved with supporting are the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester, the Food Bank of Westchester, Ability Beyond Disability and Neighbor’s Link.
“They are all doing phenomenal things,” he said.
