The Times cut ties with David Boies of Armonk, chairman of the law firm Boies, Schiller and Flexner, this week following reports from the New Yorker that he “contracted with a team of private investigators, including former Mossad agents, to try to kill a negative New York Times story about (Weinstein),” while working for the Times.
The report says that the Times has been represented by Boies’ firm several times in the past, and that it was defending the newspaper in a libel suit while it was hiring the investigators to target its journalists on behalf of Weinstein, who has been under siege in the media for weeks following dozens of claims of sexual harassment against him in Hollywood.
In a statement first released to Politico, The Times stated it “never contemplated that the law firm would contract with an intelligence firm to conduct a secret spying operation aimed at our reporting and our reporters. Such an operation is reprehensible and the Boies firm must have known that its existence would have been material to our decision whether to continue using their firm.”
Following his firing, Boies noted that he was no longer working with Weinstein, according to the report. He went on to state that it “was (his) mistake” and that he thought the scope of the work was different.
