FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn./WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – David Spittal thought he was leaving the business of mattress business for good when he sold his interest in a company he created in 2006. But it turns out the Putnam Valley resident was just getting started.
Spittal plans to open his fourth Healthy Choice Organic Mattress store by the end of June in Ridgewood, N.J. Spittal owns stores in Mount Kisco, Westport and Brookfield. More important, he is selling a product that he believes is far superior to the mattresses he sold in the past.
“After leaving my company, I spent a lot of time volunteering and was involved in a lot of interesting things,’’ Spittal said. “With my passion for the environment and a healthy lifestyle, I was able to combine those things into this business.”
His mattresses are made of all natural rubber and organic cotton and wool. All mattresses are handmade. The result is a product that he believes is healthier for people and the environment. Spittal’s first store in the Danbury Fair Mall opened in 2008. He recently moved to Brookfield, and his shops opened in Westport in 2012 and in Mount Kisco in 2010. He is the only supplier of organic mattresses in the Northeast.
“I didn’t invent this product,’’ he said. “It started in California. As research came out, it became clear there were toxins in most of the mattresses in the marketplace. We make our mattresses without chemicals and polyurethane. It’s like making furniture out of all natural wood instead of particle board. The side effect is you get a better product and it lasts longer.”
The material for Spittal’s mattresses come from a supplier in Shelton, Conn., and the beds are made in Bethany, Conn. “We don’t import anything,’’ he said. “We make them with materials that are all natural. The carbon footprint on these beds is as low as any mattress you’ll find in the country.”
Spittal said customers initially may have sought his product due to health and environmental concerns. He said they rave about the product. “The reception of customer satisfaction is through the roof,’’ he said. “They find out they’re so comfortable. These beds have a higher level of customer satisfaction than anything I’ve seen in 25 years.”
The mattresses are made to order in two to three weeks and are delivered from the warehouse. Each bed has a 25-year warranty.
“Personally, I am surprised that I got back into this business,’’ Spittal said. “When you dedicate your whole career to designing and manufacturing, and how to do all of that, there is a lot of knowledge. I did explore other industries. My plans aren’t to build a big company. It’s going to be a more medium size company that is socially responsible.”
