MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. – After 15 years in business, Mount Kisco’s The Aesthetic Sense— a fine art gallery that specializes in one-of-a-kind handmade Judaica and Israeli pieces —is closing up shop.

Store owner Karen Akst Schecter said she is ready for the next chapter in her life.

“It’s time for new challenges,” she said.

The decision to close the shop was more personal than anything else, Schecter said.

“Business has been OK. I’m just ready to move on,” she said. “Retail is hard for anyone these days.”

A closing sale is in progress. All art, gifts and Judaica pieces have been reduced in price. All merchandise, store fixtures and equipment will be sold, and the sale will continue until everything has been sold.

A customer appreciation raffle with an Apple iPad Mini as the prize will be part of the sale. Customers can enter once each time they visit by filing out an entry card. No purchase is necessary to enter the raffle. The drawing will be Sunday, March 24.

“This was one of the hardest decisions of my life. I have really enjoyed growing my business, working with wonderful, creative artists and building friendships with my customers. I love my customers and will truly miss them,” said Schecter, who has been a resident of Mount Kisco for 30 years.

“But now is the time in my life to pursue new and different challenges. Even though I am experiencing many mixed emotions, it is a very positive move forward for me,” she added.

Schecter said she will use her law degree to pursue an experience in the nonprofit world. “Hopefully I can find the same kind of fulfillment doing that, as I have found here,” she said.

Mount Kisco is losing a unique retailer who cherished doing business with her customers.

“The things you find here are things you can’t find anywhere else, and my customers know that,” she said. “Laughing with my clients and my artists is what I’ll miss most.”

The Aesthetic Sense is located at 198 E Main St in downtown Mount Kisco. Store hours will remain 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays and closed Saturdays and all Jewish holidays.
