Thursdays in January and February, 1 hour before sunset: Citizen Science - Eagle Watch: Starting Jan. 9 and ending Feb. 27, Tait and a team of volunteers will monitor roosting Bald Eagles within the Lower Hudson Valley Important Bird Area (IBA) at George’s Island, New Croton Reservoir, and Verplank. If you’re interested in this fun and exciting citizen science project, now in its 7th year, please email Tait at tjohansson@bedfordaudubon.org or call 914.232.1999.

Tuesday, Jan. 7, 8 a.m. until noon: Field Trip: Greenwich Point Park, Old Greenwich, Conn.: Plan to see seabirds, loons, and sparrows. Owls, siskins, and crossbills are also a possibility. Depart Bylane at 7 a.m. or meet in the first parking lot as you enter Greenwich Point Park at 8 a.m. Cost: Free. Level of difficulty: Easy to moderate. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 7:30 p.m.: Lecture: Crane Conservation with John Day: The International Crane Foundation utilizes a wide array of conservation programs and research to secure the future of the world’s 15 species of cranes. John Day, Director Emeritus, will introduce us to ICF’s work around the world. No registration necessary, please arrive at 7 p.m. for refreshments and the lecture begins at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 11, 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Wild for Waterfowl Workshop: Croton: Naturalist-in-Residence Tait Johansson will lead a three-part workshop on waterfowl identification and natural history this winter. Each workshop is stand-alone, but you’ll benefit from attending all three. The first workshop will cover duck topography and plumages before heading out to view and identify mergansers, Bufflehead, Wood Duck, Gadwall, Canvasback, Ruddy Duck, and others. Cost: $10 for members, $15 for non-members and we’ll credit $15 toward your membership if you join this day. Meet at Bylane. Level of difficulty: Easy. Monday, Jan. 27, 7 p.m.: Bylane Farm Book Club: Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver: Join the book club for a rare excursion into the world of fiction. Set in present-day Appalachia, the story is a parable of natural and personal catastrophe and denial. The tale focuses on a young wife and mother on a failing farm in rural Tennessee who experiences something she cannot explain, and how her discovery energizes various competing factions—religious leaders, climate scientists, environmentalists, politicians—trapping her in the center of the conflict and ultimately opening up her world.
