Community volunteers, students from Fox Lane High School’s Relay for Life Club and some of their parents and Ana Piquero, an assistant principal and the club’s faculty adviser, enjoyed the appetizers and soft drinks donated by MTK. ACS staff specialist Sarah McCannon addressed the group with a slide presentation and video describing Relay for Life.
“At Relay For Life events, teams camp out overnight and take turns walking around a track," McCannon said. "Each team is asked to have at least one participant on the track at all times.”
Highlighted in the kickoff video were some of the free initiatives offered to all cancer patients and their caregivers including:
- Road to Recovery: Transportation assistance to and from treatment.
- Hope Lodge: Lodging for those having to travel far for treatment.
- Look Good … Feel Better: Workshops that teach beauty techniques to female patients affected by appearance related side effects of cancer treatment.
- Reach to Recovery: Emotional support programs that connect newly diagnosed breast cancer patients with survivors

Fox Lane is set to host a community-oriented relay on Saturday, June 6. The suggested minimum fundraising goal of each participant is $100, and so far 12 teams and 37 people have signed up.
Lauren Prisco, founder and president of Fox Lane’s Relay for Life Club, described how club members are busy brainstorming ways to raise money before the relay. They have sold pizza and hot chocolate and held bake sales after school.
A boys varsity ice hockey Pink the Rink event was very successful. The club will hold a floor hockey tournament at the high school on Thursday, March 5.
