The free screening, called “There Was Once…" will be given at 7 p.m. at the U.S. Military Academy's Thayer Hall Room 144.
It will be followed by a discussion led by “There Was Once…” director and producer Gabor Kalman.
The documentary has been honored by the Verzio International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival, the Hungarian Film Festival and the Jewish Eye World Film Festival.
The event is sponsored by the U.S. Military Academy Library and West Point’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, in collaboration with the Cadet Film Forum, West Point Hillel and the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center in White Plains.
Praised as an inspirational tool for teaching tolerance to young people, “There Was Once…” is the story of Gyöngyi Magò, a Catholic high school teacher in Kalocsa, Hungary who was researching her town’s history when she discovers the lost Jewish community that once thrived there.
Mago’s research led her in an entirely new direction in her lessons, teaching tolerance and fighting prejudice through the lens of how the Holocaust had tragically impacted her town.
The award-winning film has sparked controversy in Hungary, where the anti-Semitic, neo-Nazi party Jobbik has gained significantly in power and influence in recent years.
