The dog was taken to the Bergen County Animal Shelter, where officials hope he can be adopted.

A witness reported seeing someone walk the dog into the park and around the zoo early Thursday afternoon.

Then, around 3:45, a zookeeper spotted the small, long-haired pooch cowering beneath a bench.

“He was very afraid. He jumped right into the zookeeper’s arms,” a source with direct knowledge of the incident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The bichon bears no collar, no tags.

“He’s very skittish,” the source said. “He doesn’t know what’s going on.”

Otherwise, the orphaned bishon appears in generally good health, although obviously neglected.

He’s already become popular among the zoo staff, who got him clean and set him up with a dish of water, some all-purpose animal food — and smooth jazz on the radio.

It’s not uncommon for disenchanted pet owners to consider zoos and aquariums places where they can “donate” their problems. However, zoos and aquariums exist to conserve wildlife. A shelter is the proper destination.

These include the Bergen County Animal Shelter in Teterboro, where the bishon will be found beginning early this evening. PHONE: (201) 229-4600
