Jet Ski Explodes, Injuring Driver's Face On Long Island, Police Say

A jet ski driver received injuries to his face after his watercraft exploded in the water on Long Island.

The explosion took place in Nassau County around 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 15 in Oyster Bay, authorities said.

According to officers aboard Nassau County Marine 11, while on patrol in the waterways the crew heard a possible explosion, then saw smoke confirming their suspicions. 

The unit navigated toward the smoke and upon arrival, they discovered a jet ski, engulfed in flames and sinking. 

The driver was close to shore at the time of the incident and made it on land with only minor lacerations to his face, police said.

He was taken by an Oyster Bay Fire Department Ambulance to a local hospital for his injuries. 

The jet ski was recovered and removed from the water by the Town of Oyster Bay, Bay Constables. 

An investigation is currently ongoing, but there is no suspicious activity at this time.
