CLIFFVIEW PILOT EXCLUSIVE: A Maywood man on probation for a hit-and-run crash that severely injured a prominent Bergen County cardiologist was tracked down this week by Hackensack police and charged in a barroom sneak attack that left the victim with a gash that needed more than 100 stitches.

David Figueroa, 25, got into an argument with the 27-year-old victim after they bumped into one another at General Poor’s Tavern on Main Street shortly before closing time on Nov. 11, according to a police report.

The second man walked away, then went to the bathroom, the report says.

Witnesses told police Figueroa waited for him, then bashed the man with a Baccardi bottle on the left side of his forehead and face as he emerged from the bathroom.

Figueroa was behind held on $40,000 bail at the Bergen County Jail, charged with aggravated assault and weapons possession, following his arrest Monday, records show.

A probation violation is also likely.

Figueroa was 20 when he got behind the wheel drunk and slammed his 2001 Honda Civic into Dr. Henry Lau, a chief cardiologist at Hackensack University Medical Center, who had been out walking his dog on Clinton Place in Hackensack the night of Dec. 27, 2006, court records show. The car also hit two parked vehicles, according to police.

Both of Lau’s legs were broken, as were several ribs. The physician, who also suffered several back and facial injuries, underwent several surgeries, followed by six months of rehabilitation at the hospital.

Figueroa was coming from a pool party at the Excelsior Apartments, a luxury hi-rise that was hit with a $7.4 million judgment by a jury in Hackensack a little over a year ago for allowing him to drink before the hit-and-run crash.

Figueroa continued driving with a smashed-in windshield before police spotted the Civic and stopped it around 7 in the morning. He was sentenced to two months in the Bergen County Jail (from the end of Dec. 2006 to the end of Feb. 2007) and five years of probation.
