What To Do Around Bedford And Mount Kisco This Weekend

BEDFORD, N.Y. —  A craft beading session, a gun and knife disarming seminar and a winter nature tour are among the events happening in the Bedford and Mount Kisco area this weekend.

British illustrator Curtis Jobling, author of the "Wereworld" series and designer of the "Bob the Builder" TV show, will visit Little Joe's Books Saturday in Katonah.

Friday, Jan. 18

"Fall Into Books" Book Club: 4 p.m. In this book club for girls in grades 3-5, participants will meet at 4 p.m. every Friday until March 22  The first book that will be discussed is "The False Prince" by Jennifer Nielsen. For more information, call the children's room at (914) 864-0130. Create Beaded Earrings and Help Others: 4:30 p.m. For a $5 materials fee, anyone 11 years of age or older can join Joan Lloyd and learn to make beaded earrings. Lloyd will talk about her work donating earrings to women's shelters. Participants can make one pair to wear and one to donate. No registration is necessary. Saturday, Jan. 19

The 3 B's of Tree ID: 10 a.m. Familiarize yourself with the varying appearance of winter trees minus their leaves. This session is a great introduction to common tree identification, an important skill for those interested in backyard maple sugaring. RSVP by Jan 18. Fee is $5. Get Cash for Gold This Saturday: 1 p.m. Get cash for your broken and unwanted jewelry. Volunteers at St. Francis Church will accept gold, platinum and silver. St. Francis A.M.E. Zion Church, 3 Hillside Ave., Mount Kisco.

Gun and Knife Disarming Seminar: 3:30 p.m. Marti Martial Arts Academy will be offering a hands-on workshop on how to disarm an attacker who has a gun or knife. This empowering seminar will be taught by expert martial arts instructor Sensei Vladimir. Cost of the class is $50. Marti Martial Arts Academy, 118 Route 117 By Pass Road, Bedford Hills.

A Visit from Author Curtis Jobling: 2 p.m. British illustrator Curtis Jobling, designer of the hit children's television show "Bob the Builder," and author/illustrator of numerous children's books, including the acclaimed "Frankenstein's Cat," will pay a visit to Little Joe's this weekend. Jobling will discuss his middle grade "Wereworld" series, in which the latest book is "Nest of Serpents" out this month. This author talk is ideal for fourth- to seventh-graders. Little Joe's Books, 25 Katonah Ave., Katonah.

SCiFi Book Club at Katonah Village Library: 1:30 p.m. Adults and teens are welcome to join the SCiFi Book Club to talk about books, movies and more. The club just read dystopian caper "Cinder" by Marissa Meyer and briefly will discuss the book and other science fiction. Designated books are available in the teen room. Daddy & Me Bagels and Blocks Program: 10:30 a.m. Dads and children ages 2-5 are invited for a free hour of fun. This first session will feature Happy Feet soccer coaches. Lost Pond in Winter: 1 p.m. Enjoy the landscape of the wildlife preserve during a wintertime walk to Lost Pond. The walk is close to 2 miles round-trip.
