MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- What do you think of Addyi, the new pill designed to boost sexual desire in women recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)?
What Do You Think Of Addyi?
Finally! Sounds like a viable option for women.
I have no opinion
Navid Mootabar, MD, Chief, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Director at Large, Institute for Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery at Northern Westchester Hospital, said Addyi fills a void in women's health that has been long overlooked.
"Decreased libido or sexual dysfunction is one of the most common complaints I receive," he said. "However most women are hesitant to talk about it.
"Hopefully Addyi will help start the conversation, help women come to the understanding that this condition it is more common than they may think and perhaps help destigmatize the topic."
He said women are truly bothered by their sexual dysfunction, which often places a strain on their marriage.
"My patients are eager to receive treatment to resolve the condition however their options are currently limited," he said.
While Addyi, as the first FDA approved medication, is "ground breaking and revolutionary," according to Dr.Mootabar, there have been concerns about its safety profile.
"It will be extremely important for the FDA to continue its due diligence in assessing the medications safety," he said. "We must be cautious to not rush to fill the desired void for such a medication, with one that can negatively affect patients."
With Addyi, he said patients will now have another option besides natural homeopathic treatments and off-label use of other drugs such as testosterone which come with some serious risks.
