Northern Westchester Hospital Offers Next Generation Of Mammograms

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- Mammograms save lives. Screening early and often for breast cancer has proven to significantly increase survival rate among those who are diagnosed. At Northern Westchester Hospital, the arrival of three dimensional mammograms has provided a clear, more definitive assessment and helped doctors find and eliminate breast cancer more accurately than ever before.

With the onset of screening mammography, surgeons have seen a 30 percent reduction in the death rate of breast cancer patients since the 1980s. The life-saving potential of mammography has spurred efforts in advancing the accuracy of breast cancer screening.

Since its introduction at Northern Westchester Hospital, digital 3D mammography, or tomosynthesis, has provided quick, clear, and more definitive breast imaging – reducing the likelihood that patients are called back for additional screening. This 3D technology, which produces multiple images of the breast rather than a single image, improves diagnostic accuracy and has decreased the potential of false-positive results by 15 percent.

Since 3D images allow for a clearer visualization of the breast by generating thin image slices that can be enhanced and manipulated on a screen, physicians can analyze the breast layer by layer and provide a more definitive and accurate assessment of each patient. While traditional 2D mammography remains the standard of care for breast imaging, the 3D mammography available at Northern Westchester is an FDA approved option for screening and cancer prevention.
