Northern Westchester Hospital Shares Healthy Kidney Tips

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- "Your kidneys are easy to ignore." says Northern Westchester Hospital's Chief of Nephrology, Dr. Martin Saltzman. "They purr away, filtering blood, eliminating toxins and impurities, and rarely complain. However, you don’t want to take these vital organs for granted."

About 90,000 Americans die each year from kidney disease, but taking a few simple precautions can help keep your kidneys running smoothly.

Saltzman said it is important to control high blood pressure and, if you are a diabetic, to manage your blood sugar. He said you should be tested if you are at an elevated risk for kidney disease due to a chronic condition.

If you have kidney disease, he advises maintaining a healthy weight, working with a renal dietitian and following a renal diet of kidney-friendly foods.
