NY Times Profile Of Pleasantville Paints Picture Of Urban, Suburban Life

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Its downtown is home to a Starbucks and an independently owned café. Its people walk just about everywhere and many of its homes have deep, deep history. But it’s not a big city, or even part of a big city. It’s Pleasantville and, according to The New York Times, it offers a “blend of urban and suburban sensibilities.”

In a profile of the village, The Times paints a picture of Pleasantville as a place where the front porches, farmers markets and friendly people of the suburbs meet the cinemas, restaurants and independent shops of the city.

The village of 7,100 people in Mount Pleasant is 1.9 square miles, which means people walk to the shops and restaurants and walk their children to school, according to The Times.

Speaking to The Times, village Mayor Peter Scherer spoke highly of Pleasantville’s historic homes like those along a mile-long stretch of Bedford Road, but conceded that high tax rates had prevented many businesses from coming to the village and that there was a general lack of diversity in the village despite regulations that new residential developments there include a substantial number of affording housing units.
