TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Restauranteurs, chefs and foodies came together at Rivermarket Kitchen and Bar in Tarrytown on Monday, Feb. 24, to kick off a two-week celebration of Hudson Valley Dining: Hudson Valley Restaurant Week.
HVRW, an event arranged and sponsored by The Valley Table, is featuring nearly 200 restaurants in the Hudson Valley, all of which are offering discounted meals from March 10-23.
Luckily for Westchester, you can find 108 of these restaurants without crossing the county line.
Janet Crawshaw, publisher and founder of Valley Table, helped begin the 10th annual HVRW by delivering her remarks on the history of dining in the Hudson Valley, and how it has grown into an internationally-recognized dining scene over the past 30 years.
"The Hudson Valley has become the prime example of the farm-to-table concept, and people are beginning to recognize it around the world," she said. "According to Westchester tourism, last year the region’s restaurants grossed over $791 million in sales.”
Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino also spoke, citing the rich dining scene in the Hudson Valley as a major draw to Westchester County.
"I know Brooklyn is the trendy place nowadays, but we are encouraging foodies to come up to Westchester and the rest of the Hudson Valley to see what their neighbors to the North have to offer," he said.
The Valley Table also used the event to award their third annual Farm-To-Table award, which was presented to Yonkers' own Peter Kelly - founder of Xaviar's Restaurant Group and owner of X20 Xaviar's on the Hudson in Yonkers.
John Crabtree, owner of Crabtree's Kittle House Inn in Chappaqua, told the story of how he first heard about Kelly, who opened up his first restaurant in the Hudson Valley when he was 23 years old, and how influential Kelly had been since then.
"(Kelly) had an amazing, modern vision that changed the Hudson Valley dining scene. He wanted to work with as many local resources he could get in order to make cuisine," he said. "Without Peter Kelly, we wouldn't be standing here today."
Kelly graciously accepted the award, thanking Crawshaw, among other influential figures in the Hudson Valley dining scene for all the work they have done to make the region stand out as a culinary destination.
