MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. It was all movement, energy, and smiles on Thursday at My Second Home in Mount Kisco, adjacent to the Mount Kisco Child Care Center.
For the first time, the Step Up Dance Companys Andrey Savenko and Judy Simon, president and vice president, taught a highly sought after class of dance and movement, giving the students a chance to get up and move.
Simon and Savenko are no strangers to the Northern Westchester community, as they volunteer for the Northern Westchester Hospital and Putnam County Hospital, giving their assistance to the elderly who want to get the adrenaline pumping.
Its the first time we worked with them, and there was such energy in the room, Simon said. We couldnt have asked for a greater response. They were ready for whatever we were going to do next.
The response was one that the two have come to expect after a session, as the participants are looking to get back what they once had.
It improves their balance and flexibility. People were starting to get it, that if you move you heal, and stay healthy longer by getting the endorphins going, said Savenko.
The pair, based out of Bedford Hills, teach a twice-weekly session at Chappaqua Crossings, and find that those who participate take the newly regained attitude home.
They really can take it home. They can play music. They can snap their fingers, sing, clap, standing up, sitting down, Simon said. It doesnt matter what the level is, but they get involved.
The hidden benefit, though, is what the instructors get from the students.
Were giving to them but they also give back. You see people when life is going no where, but now theyre starting to enjoy a activity together and do things and participate, said Simon. Its a win-win. Its a nice feeling for everybody.
