Sulzberger is the son ofthe previous Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, grandson of Times publisher Arthur Hays Sulzberger, and the great-grandson of Times owner and publisher Adolph Ochs. 

Sulzberger, who became the publisher of The New York Times in 1992 and chairman of the board of its owner, The New York Times Company, in 1997, was born Sept. 22, 1951. Sulzberger earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Tufts University in 1974. He joined The New York Times in 1978 as a correspondent in its Washington bureau. He moved to New York as a metro reporter in 1981 and was appointed assistant metro editor later that year.

From 1983 to 1987, he worked in a variety of business departments, including production and corporate planning. Sulzberger played a central role in the development of the Times Square Business Improvement District, officially launched in January 1992, serving as the first chairman of that civic organization.

He also helped found and was a two-term chairman of New York City Outward Bound. Sulzberger has been credited with developing the Times' internet operations, monetizing digital content and helping to improve the paper's bottom line. The domain "nytimes.com" attracted at least 146,000,000 visitors annually by 2008, according to a Compete.com study. The Times also had the most entries in the list of the 50 most popular newspaper blogs, with 22 of its blogs listed that year

He was honored with 2012 National Book Award, Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community.
