Mount Kisco Area Mom's Cancer Survival Leads Son To Bar Mitzvah Project

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- After Brandi Shapiro Goldenberg, a resident of the greater Mount Kisco area, survived breast cancer, her son, Ben, reacted by using his bar mitzvah project as a fundraiser to battle the illness.

"This past summer, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer," he writes in a GoFundMe page. "She was fortunate to receive annual imaging exams (mamograms, sonograms and MRIs). Because of this, the cancer was caught early and today she is healthy and cancer free!"

Key to the fundraiser is a basketball event, which he calls "Benny's March Madness Basketball Tournament." It will be open to kids in grades 5 through 8, he notes, adding that it will take place at Horace Greeley High School on March 26 at 3 p.m.

The announcement adds that kids who are older can sign up to serve as referees for the games.

Admission involves a minimum donation of $25 per person; signups are being collected on GoFundMe, with a goal of $5,000.

"The Cancer Center at Northern Westchester Hospital," the message notes. "The money will help fund a program that provides free breast cancer imaging for woman who would otherwise be unable to receive this screening."
