Westchester College Students Say 'Yes To The Mess'

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- If you see two college-aged kids walking around your neighborhood going door-to-door, you may want to let them in -- or at least hear them out.

Ben Walker of Mamaroneck and Jeremy Garber, of White Plains, have started their own business -- Ben and Jeremy's -- and have been in many a Southern Westchester cul de sac trying to drum up business.

The name and accompanying logo-- yes it's a riff on the famous ice cream company -- are all about saying yes to any mess. As their flyer reads: "We can't clean up the mess our country is in, but we can clean up the mess your house is in!"

The two business majors -- Walker is at Tulane University; Garber is at Lehigh University -- are ready to roll up their sleeves and clean your garage/attic, organize messy rooms, move heavy objects, dispose of unwanted items, and more.

Though both had offers for respected, traditional office internships they wanted to do something different -- and take a risk. "We know we'll spend many years working in an office environment, and we figured now would be a good time for us to start something on our own," said Walker.

The two rising sophomores have been close friends since kindergarten. Somewhere around middle school, their friends began to call the,m “Ben and Jeremy," a play on Ben & Jerry's.

"We always found it funny when people called us that, so we figured it would be a good logo and name for our company," said Garber who designed the logo with some help from PhotoShop and YouTube.

And while they admit they have significantly less expensive than professionals, they are not afraid of hard manual labor. "We feel we provide good value for a relatively modest price," said Walker. "We have references readily available who can attest to that fact."

To drum up business, the two have tried several tactics, the first including going door-to-door. "Although we've had our fair share of doors slammed in our faces, most people are neighborly, and we really enjoy speaking with our potential customers and developing confidence with our 'elevator pitch,'" said Garber.

They've also tried to be creative with social media.

Their logo, similar to Ben & Jerry's is definitely a conversation starter.

If interested, book soon (ish): The two rising college students, who will travel to any part of the county, are only available until summer's end.

Though, said Walker, "If anyone in Southern California or the Bahamas wants help with their garage or attic and would fly us out, we would be delighted to cater to them."
