The Volunteer Center of United Way will honor nine individuals and groups at the dinner. Broadcast journalist Lou Young will emcee the event, which begins at 8 a.m.
Hamilton will receive her award for her service to the Ken Hamilton Caregivers Center of Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco and is presented by United Way of Westchester and Putnam.
Named after her husband, who succumbed to lung cancer in 2004, Marian Hamilton founded the center to provide an oasis where those in support roles could be empowered to take care of their own needs, and find counseling and relief from the stressful journey of caregiving.
The Caregivers Center opened in 2007, and more than 7,000 volunteers have served. Hamilton still serves weekly. She continues to be a driving force for the organization, fundraising and offering enthusiasm and new ideas to support family caregivers at the center, according to the Volunteer Center.
Hamilton said she feels that all hospitals should have a dedicated support program and place of respite and advocates for similar centers in other facilities. In addition, she initiated a Caregivers Center Consortium, a biannual conference dedicated to sharing best practices and education on current caregiving issues as well as support.
Continuing to offer emotional support and care for family caregivers whether their loved one is an inpatient or outpatient, Hamilton has been a driving role model for the meaningful community that they require, according to the Volunteer Center.
Individual ticket prices for the 2014 Volunteer Spirit Awards are $75 per person ($150 for a Friend ticket, with journal recognition), and sponsorship packages and journal advertising rates are available. All proceeds benefit The Volunteer Center’s work to promote volunteerism.
