As the Town of New Castle undergoes a massive downtown infrastructure improvement project in the hamlet, questions have arisen as to where to store supplies and equipment.
The town originally had a staging area at the bottom of Smith Street, though residents complained about trucks making deliveries by a bus stop where children were waiting.
"We told them the contractors they couldn't have deliveries at a bus stop," Supervisor Rob Greenstein said. "The contractors said they couldn't control when the trucks arrive."
The town decided to scrap Smith Street and is now using storage areas around town hall. The town is considering using a hill behind town hall to store additional material, though it would need approval from the Environmental Review Board since it is within 100 feet of a stream.
"We've been going back and forth with them," Greenstein said. "They've asked us if we have other options and we don't have other options. Let's see how it all works out."
Greenstein said they have explored every possible area around town.
"We seem to be okay for now," Greenstein said. "But we may have to revisit the issue. We're trying to keep everything consolidated. We have a whole back parking lot, but we're trying to minimize the loss of spots."
The $11.6 million project is designed to improve the infrastructure in downtown Chappaqua.
The 18-month project will replace aging water and sewer mains.
