New Castle Supervisor Rob Greenstein announced this week that the changes include new signage and repaving for both sides by the train tracks. The new pavement, Greenstein added, will include improved markings.
The area, which includes the intersection of the tracks and Roaring Brook Road, has drawn concern from local and regional officials since the deadly February collision of a Metro-North train and a vehicle at a similar grade crossing in nearby Valhalla, Daily Voice has reported. Two New Castle residents were among those killed due to the collision.
The Chappaqua grade crossing's proximity to the Saw Mill River Parkway interchange, as well as Horace Greeley High School, have been among factors cited. Elected officials have voiced support for federal funding to pay for more significant work at the crossing, such as potentially replacing it with an overpass.
In his report, Greenstein added that Roaring Brook Road will need to be closed when the improvements are made. The closure, he said, will be from 7 p.m. on Friday, May 29 until late afternoon on Sunday, May 31. Additionally, Greenstein stated that detour signage and portable message boards will be posted to alert people about the work.
