Regis Philbin, a former Bedford resident, was at The Harvey School for an event called "Getting To Know Regis Philbin."

Philbin, who has been on TV for more hours than any other personality, told stories about his career and his associations with many Hollywood legends like Bing Crosby and Don Rickles.

Philbin is friends with Bedford resident Paul Shaffer, the bandleader for CBS-TV's "The Late Show With David Letterman," who helped bring him to Katonah. Letterman, a North Salem resident, did a videotaped introduction of Philbin.

"I am not here today because I have tuberculosis," Letterman joked. "I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday than being in a high school auditorium. Regis is a man that needs no introduction. Why did you ask me to introduce him?"

Philbin said he was happy to be at Harvey and was looking forward to telling old stories. He said driving through Bedford brought back pleasant memories.

"It was a nice warm feeling," Philbin said. "Bedford is not like Greenwich (Conn., where he's also lived), where there is never any parking! Bedford is such a nice little town."

Michael Goodkind, a senior at Harvey School and a Bedford resident, initially interviewed Philbin. Goodkind told Philbin he was an aspiring broadcaster.

"Are you sure?" Philbin joked.

Philbin told Goodkind to do as many gigs as he  could at school and get himself out there. Philbin said he regretted never doing that while he was in high school.

Philbin currently hosts "Crowd Goes Wild" on Fox Sports 1 and said he enjoys doing a show where he can talk about sports.

"Kathie Lee was known for looking at her nails when I talked sports," Philbin said. "Kelly Ripa would look at her shoes. And ("Live" producer Michael) Gelman had no idea what I was talking about"

Philbin, who was also interviewed by headmaster Barry Fenstermacher, said "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire" was his favorite show.

At the end, Philbin brought six women on stage and sang "Calendar Girl" with them. One lucky woman was giving flowers and Philbin serenaded her with "There She Is, Miss America."
