MOUNT KISCO , N.Y. -- The Mount Kisco Police Department will be collecting prescription drugs this Saturday, Oct. 26.
Prescription drugs are now the second-most abused category of drugs in the United States, and medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to abuse.
Also, flushing medication down the drain can taint local rivers and streams if not handled properly.
Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., residents may bring their unused and unwanted prescription drugs for disposal to the police station at 40 Green Street. The event is a project of the Mount Kisco Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Council.
If you can't make it to Saturday's disposal, then the state Department of Environmental Conservation urges residents to mix the contents with undesirable substances (such as coffee grounds, cat litter or dirt) to disguise the contents, tape the containers closed and toss into the garbage — not down the drain.
