Fast Toll Collection Coming To Tappan Zee Bridge

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – An all-electronic toll collection (AETC) system will be activated for the Tappan Zee Bridge in spring 2016, according to the New NY Bridge updates.

The new system will allow drivers to pay tolls without having to stop, with the hopes that the new system will significantly improve traffic flow and improve local air quality by diminishing idling vehicles in toll-collection lines.

An overhead gantry is being installed at exit 10 southbound New York State Thruway in South Nyack for a temporary AETC facility. The system will be activated after a series of tests this fall.

Drivers will continue to use the Tarrytown toll plaza during the testing phase and will not be affected by the gantry.

The new system will collect information on all drivers crossing the Tappan Zee, regardless of whether they have E-ZPass or not, by using Tolls by Mail for those without E-ZPass, reports FiOS1 News.

Tolls by Mail takes pictures of license plates and sends a monthly bill to the registered owner, according to the FiOS1.

To take advantage of the new AETC system, drivers are encouraged to sign up for an E-ZPass at E-ZPassNY, at E-ZPass customer service centers or the New NY Bridge Outreach Centers, located in Tarrytown and Nyack.
