A former priest who made national headlines for abusing a female patient and is now registered as a sex offender has reported a move in Putnam County.

The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services issued an alert this week to Putnam residents regarding the residency of former priest Joseph Faraone, 70, who has reported a move to the Bel-Aire Motor Lodge on Route 22 in Brewster.

Faraone made national headlines after he abused a 50-year-old female patient at a local nonprofit human service organization where he worked in August 2015, according to state police.

The Division of Criminal Justice Services has assigned Faraone as a Level 3 threat, which means he is a “high-risk repeat offender and possible threat to public safety.”

Faraone served as an associate pastor at Church of St. Denis in Hopewell Junction between 2004 and 2006 before leaving the priesthood. Before working at St. Dennis, Faraone served for 12 years at St. James the Apostle Church in Carmel, for 11 years in Yorktown at St. Patrick's Church, and at St. Francis of Assisi in Mount Kisco.

During his time in Yorktown, the former priest also won $1.1 million in the New York State Lottery.

According to the Division of Criminal Justice Services, Faraone had sexual contact with his 50-year-old victim, who was incapable of consenting, on Aug. 15, 2015. He was convicted of having sexual contact with an individual greater than 17 and second-degree criminal sexual act with a mentally disabled victim and sentenced to a term of 10 years probation and one year in jail the following year. Faraone is now under the jurisdiction of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
