Mount Kisco 9/11 Memorial Dedicated to Village

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. – The Mount Kisco Board of Trustees unanimously passed a resolution Monday to authorize the dedication of the Mount Kisco Volunteer Fire Department’s 9/11 memorial to the village.

The fire department presented the board with a flag and a certificate as a formal token of gratitude for its support of the memorial, which was built for last year's decade anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001.

Last year from August 18 to 21, that flag decorated the front of one of Mount Kisco Fire Department’s engines, which was the last vehicle in a procession of more than 3,000 motorcycles that participated in the annual motorcycle memorial ride sponsored by America’s 9/11 Foundation. The fire engine had been on duty on 9/11.

The 16 Mount Kisco firefighters who took part in the ride traveled from ground zero, to the Pentagon and then to the United Flight 93 memorial in Stonycreek Township, Penn.

Mayor Michael Cindrich congratulated the 9/11 Memorial Committee on its achievement and acknowledged its dedication to the project.

“I know how hard you worked and I know it was a labor of love, but it was difficult not only in the fundraising end of it but the manual labor end of it,” he said.

Firefighters Paul Felice and Rich Alexander, the two co-chairs of the committee, presented the plaque to the board. Felice thanked Village Manager Jim Palmer for his work in preparing the deed that would transfer proprietorship of the memorial to the village at its dedication.

The tower, which stands beside the Mount Kisco Village Library and the veterans memorial, is made of two 7-foot black granite towers that are arranged in a pentagon-shaped fountain.

On the faces of the towers are the names George Morell and Michael Berkeley, two residents of the department’s fire district who died that day.

The Mount Kisco Chamber of Commerce will honor the committee as a whole as Citizens of the Year at a ceremony on May 9.
