Mount Kisco Family Earn Martial Arts Belts Together

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- A Mount Kisco mother, son and daughter recently earned belts in Jiu-Jitsu and Karate at Tiger Schulmann's Mixed-Martial Arts School.

Trainer Joshu Larry Barnes trained all three members in different classes at the Mount Kisco facility and said Julie, Ben and Nadia C. have formed a unique bond they won't soon forget, according to the MMA School's website.

"I hope that some crazy burglar never tries to break in to this house," Barnes said on the website. "All in all this family is awesome. Even though they are not on the mat together they are creating a special bond that they will never forget all the while getting in great shape and learning how to protect themselves. What a great family. Now we just need to get their dad on the mat."

Ben was the first to join Barnes' classes and recently earned his low yellow belt, according to the site.

"Of all the reasons kids join MMA I think confidence is the most important. Confident kids don’t get picked on. Confident kids don’t make bad decisions. Confident kids achieve," Ben said on the site.

Ben's mother Julie recently earned her blue belt after watching her son and eventually joining a class on her own, Barnes said on the site.

“Stepping out of your comfort zone is very difficult but is the only way to grow as a person," Julie said on the site. "Once you do it the feeling of empowerment is unmatched.”

Youngest daughter Nadia had been watching her older brother Ben and was interested in joining a class as soon as she was eligible, Barnes said on the site. Nadia recently earned her low blue belt.

“Bullies will often mistake kindness for weakness," Nadia said. "Training in MMA shows kids that you do not have to act tough to be tough. Someone ready for trouble is usually more dangerous than those looking for trouble.”
