The railroad crossing is located at Roaring Brook Road near the Saw Mill River Parkway, Horace Greeley High School and the Chappaqua Crossing property, a heavily trafficked part of town.
"There's traffic and a traffic light in close proximity to the crossing," Supervisor Rob Greenstein said. "It increases the chances a car gets stuck on the tracks. There has been a lot of accidents. This will help alleviate a dangerous situation."
Greenstein said the town has the land, donated by the owners of the former Reader's Digest property, to work for a bridge and the bridge idea has received support from the State Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Transit Authority. A bridge would cost about $40 million.
"All that's missing is the money," Greenstein said.
The town is hoping the project will be placed on the state's Transportation Improvement List, which will make it easier to advocate for federal funding, Greenstein said.
