New York Times Follows Up On Daily Voice Report Of Windswept Farm Arrests

State police arrested two workers on the Colley family's 300-acre Windswept Farm and accused them stealing $30,000 worth of hay and selling it, Daily Voice first reported Tuesday.

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. -- While investigators say they have no evidence connecting two alleged hay thieves with the November murder of North Salem socialite Lois Colley, the investigation has turned to what they may know, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

Both 33-year-old men -- Angel H. Parra Penafiel and Hugo Ramirez-Morales -- are North Salem residents and employed by the farm as laborers, state police said. They stole and then sold the hay over the last several years, police said.

Parra Penafiel and Ramirez-Morales were arraigned in the Town of North Salem Justice Court before Judge John M. Aronian and held in the Westchester County Jail on $50,000 cash bail/bond. The defendants are scheduled to return to the North Salem Court on Monday, Jan. 11, according to Daily Voice.

Penafiel and Ramirez-Morales reportedly worked several years for the Colleys, The New York Times said.

The plot to steal and sell hay was from Feb. 12, 2013 to Nov. 9, 2015, according to the New York Times.

Speaking anonymously, an official reportedly said the arrest are not a "big break" in the case but the alleged suspects "are all part of a greater or lesser circle of people who may or may not know something," the New York Times said.
