NWH Robot Gall Bladder Surgery First In County

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. — Dr. Jerald Wishner became the first surgeon in Westchester County to perform a robot-assisted gallbladder removal surgery through a single one-inch incision , Northern Westchester Hospital announced Monday.

Westchester's first single-incision, robot-assisted gallbladder surgery, performed Oct. 10, used the sophisticated da Vinci Robotic Surgical System to insert several delicate instruments through one tiny cut. The traditional laparoscopic gallbladder removal procedure requires four incisions.

The result was virtually scarless, as the minimally invasive surgery makes the incision in the belly button using a high-definition, three-dimensional imaging system.

Surgeons at Northern Westchester Hospital regularly perform robot-assisted gynecological procedures such as hysterectomies; urologic procedures such as prostatectomies; and general surgery procedures including colorectal surgery.

“Robot-assisted surgery enables surgeons to perform sophisticated, highly intricate procedures by enhancing visualization and improving overall dexterity,” said Wishner, co-director of the hospital’s Institute for Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery .

Wishner is one of a small group of surgeons in the country who has received specialized training and certification to perform this type of gallbladder robotic surgery, which can be performed in about one hour with most patients going home the same day.

According to the American College of Surgeons, surgery is the recommended treatment for gallbladder pain from gallstones and non-functioning gallbladders.

Besides the improved cosmetic outcomes, other potential benefits of single-incision gallbladder surgery include less pain, less blood loss and faster recovery.
