Occupy Main Street Energizes Downtown Mt. Kisco

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. – The Occupy Main Street movement, brainchild of Mt. Kisco residents Maria Colaco and Sarah O’Grady, was unveiled to the public Tuesday night.

The group’s inaugural meeting was the culmination of the founders’ work to start a dialogue in the community. The goal of Occupy Main Street, according to Colaco and O’Grady, is to come up with creative solutions to reinvigorate the small business scene downtown.

Mt. Kisco storeowners Leslie Bijoux and Cathy Deutsch came out together to the meeting at the Mount Kisco Public Library. Bijoux owns Yogi’s Paw, an upscale children’s clothing store, with her husband Eric Sussman, and Deutsch is the owner of Tiger Lily, a contemporary women’s boutique, both located on Main Street.

Deutsch said that retailers in town want to see improvement, as there are close to a dozen empty storefronts on display. Retailers, she said, would like to reinvent Mt. Kisco’s downtown in a way that would attract more shoppers.

Deutsch said she was planning to suggest “some kind of higher scale events geared to promoting businesses rather than just another sale.” She said she was interested in getting more visibility to show how unique Mt. Kisco stores are, with the goal of attracting more business to the area.

O’Grady said that she is impressed that there were not just business people coming out to the meeting, but residents and shoppers as well. Colaco said she and O’Grady were looking forward to engaging with the community.

“Residents are not always aware that you can be part of the decisions made and you should be,” said Colaco.

Dennis Breen of Mt. Kisco said he was involved in Occupy Wall Street and attended the key rally that occurred on Nov. 17 in New York City, but that he is now interested in getting involved in progressive action to help the economy on the local level.

“I want to see what is happening locally and see what I can participate in,” said Breen.
