Pre-Construction Work to Begin on Taconic

The northbound AMVETS Bridge will get a facelift beginning March 26, that's expected to extend its lifespan another 50 years. Pre-construction of the roadways affected gets underway on Monday.

Traffic slowdowns are expected this week as state transportation officials plan intermittent lane closures on the Taconic State Parkway beginning Monday to prepare the road for the AMVETS Bridge reconstruction project.

The New York State DOT is advising motorists that intermittent lane closures can occur any time between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the southbound Taconic State Parkway just north of Route 134 to Pines Bridge Road from Monday through Friday.

The lane closures are to prepare the roadway for the bridge project that begins Monday March 26 and is expected to last at least nine months.

During that time, northbound traffic will be re-routed onto the southbound span of the Taconic and the roadway will go from three lanes to two lanes.

Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling through the work area this week and to pay particular attenion to all traffic control devices, work zone signs, and flaggers.

The State DOT reminds drivers that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.

Dina Greenhand:

What might be the reason for the reconstruction of the bridge? Will you'd still under bridge construction after this?

Francis T McVetty:

Thanks bmarschhauser for that information. May I also suggest that, if not already, the town have contingency plans for the traffic going around this bottleneck. You know people will be taking "shortcuts", right? Those "shortcuts" sometimes are worst than the problem road you were on. Also has anyone notified either Garmin or TomTom of this change?

Francis T McVetty:

Talk about a nightmare for motorists, this is it. Have you seen the proposed 4 lanes on the south bound bridge? Just imagine them with a jersey barrier in between the two. Talk about tight. With the size of some of the vehicles traveling the Taconic there will be some side swipes. I do hope that the speed limit will be reduced to 35 or 45 MPH at the bridge crossing with signs of this change well in advance.
I have driven this route for over 44 years and every year the drivers get worse and worse. This will be a test of driving skills for sure. I can see the tow company doing a lot of business on this crossing. I do hope that I am wrong on this and the drivers do prove me wrong.

bmarschhauser:

Thanks for commenting, Francis! The speed limit will be lowered to 30 MPH over the bridge during construction.
