White smoke rose from the Vatican on Wednesday as the College of Cardinals confirmed the election of Argentinian Jorge Mario Bergiglio as Pope Francis.
According to a live CNN report, Bergiglio, 76, is the first non-European pope in centuries. The South American native replaces Pope Benedict XVI, who retired last month at age 85 because he felt he could no longer fulfill his duties.
It was the first time in nearly 600 years that a pope resigned.
