Westchester Roadways To Be Refurbished Under $60M Project

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – Several Westchester County municipalities will be affected over the next two years, as the New York Thruway Authority kicks off a near $60 million project that will affect 14 miles of interstate roadway.

Crews will be working on I-95 in the north Bronx, Pelham, New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, Harrison and Rye over the next two years.

Earlier this week, officials with the committee announced the radical, $58.7 million project, which will provide a major facelift for I-95, and include an increased police presence in construction zones throughout the duration of the two-year project.

Plans also include a road resurfacing and bridge repair that will affect motorists in the north Bronx, Pelham, New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, Harrison and Rye. The project is already underway, with crews presently working on repairing concrete pavement and bridge rehabilitation around New Rochelle.

The project is expected to conclude sometime in the summer of 2016.

Because I-95 is so heavily utilized each day, crews have had to work closely with state police to avoid any work zone related accidents, according to Thomas Madison, the executive director of the New York State Thruway Authority.

“This project will create greatly improved driving conditions for Thruway motorists, but as with any road construction, traffic patterns and conditions will vary throughout the project and drivers need to be alert and careful in construction zones,” he said in a statement.

New York State Police Troop T Commander Major Evelyn Mallard added that patrols in the area will strictly be enforcing traffic and safety laws.

“The state police puts a great emphasis on highway safety and safeguarding the men and women working to rebuild New York roadways,” she said. “Throughout the duration of the project, troopers will be actively enforcing the vehicle and traffic laws with the goal of minimizing traffic incidents.”
