WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. In an effort to green the City of White Plains, the Department of Public Works has planted 135 trees during the spring and summer, and 100 more will be planted this fall, according to the city website.
Of those 135, 80 are street trees that have been planted in the downtown area, many of which filled tree wells that were empty or had dead trees. The additional 100 will be planted in November as part of the DPWs annual fall planting program.
In addition to having a bustling downtown with good shopping and restaurants, we want our downtown to be aesthetically appealing as well, Mayor Thomas Roach said in a statement. This enhances the citys reputation and helps our businesses.
The city will begin another green initiative by using flexi-pave in tree wells beginning this fall. The material, made from recycled tires, makes the tree well surface smooth and firm while allowing the tree to transfer water and air, according to the release. This will make it easier for street trees to co-exist with pedestrians in White Plains heavily trafficked sidewalks in the downtown area.
Nearly 40 tree wells on Post Road, between Mamaroneck Avenue and South Broadway will be reconstructed using flexi-pave. Another 20 along Main Street between Bank Street and Conroy Drive will also be affected.
