To the editor:

Despite being a professional writer, I have hardly ever written a letter to a newspaper. In this case, however, I want to voice support for a neighbor of mine, Karen Schleimer, who is running for County Legislator in District 2.

Karen is not a seasoned politician spouting well-scripted sound bites or making side deals to benefit party-agenda items. In fact, she is one of the most independent thinkers you possibly could meet, ready to take on issues that support the rights of the people, not just a carefully select segment, but all of the people, including seniors and minorities.

While working as an attorney, Karen has spent years on a host of committees in Mount Kisco. Why? Because she wants to see that money is spent wisely and issues are addressed and not put on the back burner. While some committee members, opposing attorneys and politicians only glance at documents or research papers, Karen scrutinizes them and very often finds the root of the issues buried within them.

She is persistent and despite standing just over 5 feet tall, will do battle with anyone. Believe me, I’ve seen her in action.

Did I mention she is also extremely intelligent?

This county needs someone with Karen’s grit and determination. We need someone who can look at the issues carefully rather than offering “we know best,” condescending political attitudes. We no longer need politics as usual, but instead someone who will listen to us … all of us.

This is a diverse community with all sorts of natural, physical and intellectual resources. I know Karen is always working hard to protect the resources of our communities, and we really need her at a level where she can accomplish a lot of positive things. I also like to see the non-politicians have their opportunity to do great things.
