Letter: Vote Brian Sheerin For Bedford School Board Seat

BEDFORD, N.Y. -- The Bedford Daily Voice accepts signed letters to the editor. Send letters to norwalk@dailyvoice.com.

To the Editor:

Our school district is fortunate to have Brian Sheerin as a candidate running for a seat on the school board.

Brian is a passionate person who cares deeply about public schools and has devoted an enormous amount of time trying to improve various school policies that affect our students. Brian Sheerin never thought twice about enrolling his children in our public schools when he first moved here from lower Westchester County over eight years ago. There are few parents who are as knowledgeable about our school district's curriculum as Brian is.

As a devoted and active parent he has made progress on behalf of our children. He is a discerning individual, open-minded, with a reputation as a problem solver. He has spent decades fighting for inclusion for all. Sincere, friendly and approachable, Brian Sheerin would be the board member you can contact directly and feel confident knowing he has listened intently to your concerns.

A real estate agent by trade, Brian hears firsthand the concerns from prospective buyers of real estate in our towns; his expertise in real estate is sorely needed on our school board. For most households a home is their single largest investment. Westchester County homeowners shell out more in property taxes than any other county in the nation, causing many to flee our county and others to avoid it altogether. Despite record low interest rates, a 5.2 percent unemployment rate in Westchester County, an all time high in the S+P 500 index, our property values have continued to lag other assets that have appreciated in this slow recovering economy.

Too often we have observed school board members and the administration craft a budget without considering retirees, the elderly, private school parents, and our local businesses. These are generous, valuable and productive members of the community who help fund our enormous school budget. Ignoring the interests of empty-nesters, seniors, private school proponents and small-business owners does not come without consequences. Frequently, we hear budget doves fawn over the diversity of our district. But placing the burden of high taxation on nonusers of the school system will only leave us with less of them and a less diverse community. Please vote for Brian Sheerin, a principled candidate who cares about all constituencies in our district,  for school board on May 19.
