A third of the home was fully involved when the first fire crews arrived at 6:33 p.m., Bedford Hills Fire Department Chief Dominick Bueti said.
“We did try to make an aggressive entrance,” Bueti said. The fire reached the third floor, which is an attic, so firefighters approached from the home's exterior, where they knocked out most of the fire. As of 9:30 p.m., firefighters were back inside the house off Bedford Center Road near Interstate 684.
The most active hotspot was located in the garage, where firefighters believe the blaze may have started, Bueti said. The 6,500- to 7,500-square-foot home has a three-car garage.
No one was home when the blaze started, Bueti said, but someone called the fire department not long after a fire alarm alerted dispatchers.
Jill Vandercar, who lives at the end of Stone Bridge Lane, was one of the neighbors who stood behind the police tape Tuesday night as firefighters battled the blaze.
“I’ve never seen so many firefighters in one place,” Vandercar said.
Twelve or more mutual aide departments arrived to help, with about 75 firefighters in all, Bueti said. Fire crews from Ossining, Yorktown, Katonah, Somers, Croton Falls and Mount Kisco assisted.
Last week, about 50 firefighters from seven fire departments responded to a fire on nearby Hook Road in Bedford on New Year’s Day.
