Jonathan David, 31 of Danbury, was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by another vehicle on the highway, state police investigator Joseph Beccera said. David was driving at a high rate of speed when he rear-ended another vehicle, sending that vehicle into a nearby grassy median, police said. David then got out to assess the damage and was struck by an oncoming car.

The driver of the car that struck David, Rita Smith, 26, of Middletown, was hospitalized with head trauma injuries after her vehicle rolled after the collision, police said.

Two occupants of the car that was rear-ended by David were also hospitalized with minor injuries. A second accident between two cars also occurred shortly after the initial accident and caused minor injuries to the occupants, police said.

An autopsy was being Wednesday to determine an official cause of David's death.

The multicar accident closed all southbound lanes on I-684 for several hours.
