On Thursday, acting Westchester County District Attorney James McCarty announced that Ronald Clare Greenland, 53, was arraigned in Westchester County Court on multiple charges for a November incident at the Arroway Chevrolet-Cadillac dealership on North Bedford Road.

According to McCarty, at approximately 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, a Westchester County police officer was conducting an inspection of the dealership when he noticed a “suspicious vehicle” in the parking lot.

The officer approached the Honda Odyssey minivan as it left the property, and Greenland failed to pull over, continuing onto Knowlton Avenue before fleeing on foot. Greenland was chased through multiple backyards before he was caught on Dickson Lane in Bedford.

During the struggle between the two men, Greenland struck the arresting officer multiple times and attempted to stab him before he was subdued and taken into custody.

On Thursday, Greenland was officially charged with felony counts of attempted murder, attempted assault, attempted aggravated assault on a police officer, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. He was also charged with misdemeanor counts of unlawfully fleeing a police officer, resisting arrest and possession of a burglar’s tool.

Greenland has a lengthy criminal history and has twice been deported to his native Jamaica.

According to police, they had recently increased patrols around Arroway and other car dealerships after there were multiple larcenies of tires, rims and other car parts overnight. The responding officer was on patrol when he spotted Greenland’s minivan.

A subsequent investigation yielded the knife at the scene, and there were several punctures in the officer's bullet-resistent vest. Officers also discovered a car jack and cinder blocks beneath a pickup truck in the Arroway parking lot. Furthermore, the minivan was determined to have been reported stolen from Scarsdale in September.

Greenland is also facing federal charges because he had previously been deported back to Jamaica and illegally returned to the United States. His deportation stemmed from his participation in a car theft ring. He was remanded to jail and is due back in court on Tuesday, Jan. 17, where he will face life in prison.

"I commend (our officer) for the courage and the skill he demonstrated in apprehending this violent and dangerous suspect," Westchester Police Commissioner George Longworth stated. "He could have been seriously injured, and we are thankful that did not occur."
