Shortly before 11:45 a.m. on Sunday morning, New York State Police troopers from the Poughkeepsie barracks were dispatched to the southbound lanes of the Taconic in Pleasant Valley, north of Route 44, where there was a reported rollover.

According to police, the investigation determined that a Subaru Outback, operated by 65-year-old resident of Baldwin in Nassau County on Long Island, Lawrence Rycyk, was being driven in the passing lane of the parkway when the vehicle exited the western side of the roadway, striking a rock embankment before overturning and becoming engulfed in flames.

On Wednesday, a state police spokesperson said that Rycyk was still in the hospital.

Police said that Rycyk and his passenger, 64-year-old Ronnie Rycyk, were removed from the burning vehicle by “Good Samaritans” before first responders arrived at the scene.

Lawrence Rycyk was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital with life-threatening injuries, his passenger was announced dead at the scene by members of the Pleasant Valley Fire Department.

The collision was reconstructed by the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and is still under investigation. The cause of the crash has not been released. Keep following Daily Voice for updates.
