FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A Mount Kisco man and relative of the owners of the New York Giants was charged Friday with felony assault in Fairfield, according to police reports.

Fairfield police were called to St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport on New Year’s Day because of a report of an assault victim receiving surgery for life-threatening injuries, according to the police report. The victim, a Fairfield University student, was at a party on Fairfield Beach Road when he was struck in the head with a glass bottle, police said.

Investigators identified John V. Mara, 22, of Hammond Ridge Road in Mount Kisco, N.Y., as the suspect in the case, according to police reports. He turned himself in after learning of a warrant for his arrest Friday evening, police say. Mara, also a Fairfield University student, is the nephew of John Mara, the owner of the New York Giants football team. The team had no comment on the incident as of Monday morning.

Mara was charged with first-degree assault, a felony, and a breach of the peace, a misdemeanor. He was released on a $150,000 bond, and he is scheduled to appear March 8 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
