Troopers arrested Anthony Velazquez of the Bronx after they responded to a report of a disabled car located on I-684. When they arrived, they found a man who told them he was the designated driver for the evening, but when one of his passengers became ill, he pulled over to the side of the road to help the woman while she was sick.
While they were outside of the car, Velazquez jumped in the driver's seat and started to drive away. The man grabbed the side pillar of the car to try and prevent Velazquez from driving away, but he continued to pull away and the man fell to the ground, sustaining a non-life threatening head injury, state police said.
Velazquez was located on the side of Old Hopewell Road in the Town of Wappinger where he had crashed the car. When he talked with troopers they were able to determine he was drunk, police said.
He was remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bond or $7,500 cash bail. He is due to appear in both town courts at a later date and time.
The victim was treated by North Castle EMS and refused further treatment.
