Smoke Caused Death In Mount Kisco Group Home Fire

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. — The victim of the fatal fire Wednesday night at a group home at 43 Highland Ave. died due to smoke inhalation, according to the Westchester Medical Examiner.

The medical examiner's office confirmed Thursday Richard Bouman, a 50-year-old resident of the home for mentally disabled adults, was killed as a result of "asphyxia due to inhalation of smoke containing carbon monoxide.”

The fire first was reported at the three-story structure, which is operated by Community Living Corp., shortly before 9:30 p.m., according to Mount Kisco Fire Chief Tom Jackson. The victim was discovered on the third floor, where the blaze apparently started, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the fire still is being investigated. The flames were under control within 10 minutes, according to Jackson.
