From June 7 through June 13, New York State Police issued 21,864 tickets during its annual “Speed Week” campaign, where they target aggressive drivers using marked patrol and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement vehicles in an effort to encourage motorists to slow down on Hudson Valley roads.

According to police, speeding is listed as a contributing factor in nearly one-third of all fatal crashes in New York. More than 42,000 people die as a result of traffic crashes each year in America’s highways and hundreds of thousands are seriously injured.

During this year’s Speed Week campaign, 9,456 drivers were cited for speeding, nearly 300 were arrested for driving while intoxicated and police investigated 315 personal injury accidents, which resulted in 412 people being injured, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo noted.

Additionally, there were more than 1,000 motorists cited for seatbelt violations, 695 tickets issued for distracted driving and nearly 400 drivers that were ticketed for violating the Move Over Law.

In the Hudson Valley, 4,988 total tickets were issued, including more than 2,000 for speeding. On the New York State Thruway, 3,326 drivers were ticketed.

"We hope campaigns such as this will make motorists think twice about making dangerous decisions behind the wheel,” New York State Police Superintendent George P. Beach II said in a statement. “We urge all motorists to make safety their top priority, drive sober, wear a seat belt and put away their smart phones. By doing so, they will help to prevent needless tragedies.”

"Reckless driving can lead to tragedy and potential life altering consequences for drivers and passengers on New York's roadways," Cuomo added. "I applaud the State Police and their partners in law enforcement for keeping dangerous drivers accountable and for their continued commitment to making our streets safer."
