Maloney, who represents the 18th district, posted a video on Facebook following the Wednesday shooting of a congressman as Republicans were practicing for the Congressional Baseball game.

In the video, Maloney said it's important to work across the aisle to get legislation passed.

“In this business, the rhetoric gets hot and the passions run high and that's normal, and it's even good, but that's very different than engaging in violence, Maloney said. "And so it's just a reminder to all of us that we need to be careful about the way we speak and the way we interact with each other."

Maloney said he intend to attend the baseball game Thursday night in Washington.

"People should know that on a personal level, members of Congress do get along. I've got many friends across the aisle," Maloney said. "We workout together at the gym, we see each other socially, and we know each other’s families. It’s better than you think. We are Americans first, so I hope you'll all help me with that and take that to heart, and I'll keep working down here to get things done. Thank you.”
