WESTCHESTER, N.Y. -- If you are not registered to vote, volunteers in Westchester County can help you Tuesday during National Voter Registration Day.
Across the country volunteers and nonprofits will be making an effort to register thousands to vote in this year's election. In the 2008 elections, there were six million Americans who did not vote because they did not know how to register or missed their state's registration deadline, according to the National Voter Registration Day website.
Volunteers from the League of Women of the Rivertowns will be at several locations in Tarrytown, Greenburgh, Hastings and Dobbs Ferry, said President Susan Goodwin. They will be at the Tarrytown and Hastings train stations handing out voter registration forms and absentee ballot applications in the morning, there will be a table set up at the Greenburgh Stop & Shop later in the day, and volunteers will be at Mercy College from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"This is a long tradition throughout the county and something we take pride in," Goodwin said. She is predicting that they will hand out 60 to 80 registration forms and encourage people to register. It is especially important for people who have recently moved to be registered.
"To us, the vote is basic to democracy, and we want to do anything we can to expand the electorate."
The League of Women Voters of New Castle will be registering people to vote at the Chappaqua Starbucks from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and at the Millwood A&P from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Members of the Harrison League of Women Voters will be at the Harrison Public Library handing out applications from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday.
“Anyone who was not registered previously, or who has moved, or who has changed his or her name needs to fill out a voter registration form,” Harrison League President Lola Geiger said in a statement. “We hope you will stop by one of our tables, where we will also be glad to answer any of your questions.”
There are currently 552,055 registered voters in Westchester County, according to the County Board of Electors. The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 11.
